# Exercise & Autoimmunity: Finding your “Sweet Spot”

If you live with an autoimmune condition, exercise advice can feel frustratingly simple:

Just move more.

But what happens when exercise leaves you exhausted for the rest of the day? When a workout that used to feel easy suddenly takes two days to recover from? Or when you're afraid that pushing too hard could make your symptoms worse?

Movement is incredibly important for people living with autoimmune disease. But the goal isn't simply to exercise more.

The goal is to find your exercise sweet spot.

## Your Muscles Do More Than Move You

We often think about muscle in terms of strength, mobility, and metabolism. But muscle is also an active endocrine organ.

When muscles contract during exercise, they release signalling molecules called myokines . These molecules communicate with other tissues throughout the body and can influence inflammation, metabolism, immune function, and even brain health.

Regular movement can also support insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular health, mitochondrial function, bone density, mood, and maintenance of muscle mass - all particularly important when you're managing a chronic inflammatory condition.

I often think of muscle as a kind of armour.

Not armour that prevents illness or guarantees that flares won't happen, but something we can intentionally build to give our bodies more strength, stability, and reserve when life, an flare or illness happens. .

For those of us living with chronic illness, that reserve matters. If illness, a flare, or a period of reduced activity temporarily takes something away from us, having more strength and muscle to begin with can give us a greater foundation to work from. Maintaining muscle also supports mobility, metabolic health, independence, and our ability to stay active over the long term.

In other words, exercise isn't just about fitness.

It's about building capacity and resilience and giving our bodies a little more armour for whatever comes next.

## But There Can Be Too Much of a Good Thing

Exercise itself is a form of physiological stress.

In the right dose, that stress is beneficial: the body responds, adapts, and becomes stronger.

But when the exercise demand is greater than your current ability to recover, especially alongside poor sleep, illness, psychological stress, inadequate nutrition, or active inflammation, it can become another thing your body has to manage.

This is where the exercise sweet spot  becomes important.

You want enough challenge to create an adaptation, without repeatedly pushing yourself so far that you spend the next day (or several days) trying to recover.

And that sweet spot isn't static.

Your capacity may be very different during a stable period than it is after an infection, during a flare, following several nights of poor sleep, or during an especially stressful season of life.

## Signs You May Be Doing Too Much

Some muscle fatigue or soreness after exercise can be completely normal, particularly when starting something new.

What we're paying attention to is the pattern of recovery .

This is where I like to think about what I call your inflammation bucket .

Imagine your body has a bucket representing the total inflammatory and physiological load it's managing at any given time. Many things can add to that bucket: an infection, poor sleep, psychological stress, blood sugar dysregulation, underlying inflammation, inadequate recovery and overexertion can contribute too.

Exercise in an appropriate dose can actually help support healthy inflammatory regulation over time. But when you're already carrying a high physiological load, a workout that you could normally tolerate may suddenly be enough to push you beyond your current capacity.

It's one reason your exercise “sweet spot” can change from week to week, or even day to day.

If workouts consistently leave you significantly more fatigued, worsen your symptoms, disrupt your sleep, increase pain beyond your usual post-exercise soreness, or leave you feeling like you need days to recover, your current exercise dose may be exceeding your capacity.

That doesn't necessarily mean exercise is bad for you.

It may simply mean we need to adjust the intensity, duration, frequency, type of exercise—or recovery between sessions.

## Start With Where You Are

One of the biggest mistakes I see is trying to exercise at the level you used to be able to tolerate.

I get it…I’ve made this mistake before more often that I care to admit…

Instead, start with what your body can consistently recover from today .

That might mean:

- a 10–15 minute walk
- a short resistance-training session starting with as few reps and sets as you can tolerate
- swimming or cycling
- Pilates or yoga
- mobility work
- breaking movement into several smaller sessions throughout the day
From there, gradually build.

Resistance training can be especially valuable because maintaining muscle supports metabolic health, mobility, bone health, and long-term function. But you don't need an elaborate gym routine to begin.

Consistency matters far more than having the “perfect” workout.

## Recovery Needs to be Part of the Exercise Plan

Your ability to recover from exercise is influenced by your sleep, nutrition, mitochondrial health, stress physiology, inflammation, and overall disease activity.

Sometimes the answer isn't to stop exercising.

That might mean adding recovery days, eating enough protein and carbohydrates, improving sleep, reducing exercise intensity as needed, or simply recognizing that your body needs a different approach during a flare or stressful period.

## Movement Should Build Capacity, Not Constantly Deplete It

Living with autoimmunity doesn't mean you need to be afraid of exercise.

In fact, appropriately dosed movement can be one of the most valuable tools we have for supporting long-term health.

But you also don't have to prove anything by pushing through.

Your exercise sweet spot is the amount of movement that challenges your body and still allows you to recover .

Start there.

Build slowly.

Pay attention to what your body tells you.

Because the goal isn't to win today's workout.

It's to build a body that has more capacity for everything you want to do tomorrow.
