We know exercise is good for us.
It supports cardiovascular health, bone density, muscle mass, insulin sensitivity, mood, sleep, and long-term metabolic health.
But when it comes to hormones, there can be a tendency to assume that if some exercise is good, more must be better.
That's not always the case.
On one end of the spectrum, too little movement can contribute to insulin resistance, loss of muscle mass, poorer metabolic health, and declining bone strength.
On the other, high training loads without enough fuel or recovery can interfere with reproductive hormone signalling and menstrual cycles.
Somewhere between those two extremes is the amount of movement that challenges your body enough to create positive change while still giving it the resources it needs to adapt.
And that “right amount” won't look exactly the same for every woman.
What Happens When We're Not Moving Enough?
Muscle is much more than something that helps us move.
It's metabolically active tissue. Our muscles help take up and store glucose (sugar), and regular muscle contraction improves the body's sensitivity to insulin.
When we're consistently inactive, we miss out on some of those benefits.
This can be particularly relevant for women with PMOS (previously PCOS) or insulin resistance, where higher insulin levels can influence androgen/testosterone production and interfere with ovulation.
Movement can help interrupt that cycle.
Walking, cardiovascular exercise, and resistance training can all improve insulin sensitivity. And building muscle gives us more metabolically active tissue capable of using glucose.
Contracting muscles also release myokines, signalling molecules that communicate with other tissues throughout the body and influence processes including metabolism and inflammation.
So when we talk about exercise for hormonal health, we're not talking simply about burning calories.
We're creating metabolic signals that can influence the environment in which our hormones are functioning.
But Can You Exercise Too Much?
This is where the other side of the equation matters.
Exercise is a physiological stressor.
That's not a bad thing. In the right dose, the temporary stress of exercise is exactly what tells your body to adapt - to become stronger, fitter, and more metabolically efficient.
The problem arises when training demands repeatedly exceed the energy and recovery available to support them.
Your brain is constantly receiving information about whether enough energy is available to meet the body's needs. When energy availability becomes too low, because of high exercise demands, inadequate food intake, or a combination of both, the body can begin conserving resources.
One system that can be affected is the reproductive system.
Ovulation may become less consistent. Menstrual cycles can become longer or irregular. In more significant cases, periods can stop altogether.
This isn't a sign that exercise is “bad for your hormones.”
It's a sign that the body may not have enough resources available to support both the training demand and normal physiological function.
Your Period Can Be Useful Feedback
Your menstrual cycle can provide valuable information about what is happening physiologically.
If you previously had regular cycles and they suddenly become irregular after significantly increasing your training volume or intensity, that's worth paying attention to.
Other signs that your training and recovery may be out of balance can include persistent fatigue, difficulty recovering between workouts, declining performance, disrupted sleep, frequent injuries, or feeling as though every workout takes more from you than it gives back.
Rather than responding by pushing harder, these are opportunities to look at the bigger picture:
Are you eating enough to support your activity?
Are you recovering between workouts?
Are you sleeping well?
Has your training load increased significantly?
What other stressors is your body managing right now?
Exercise doesn't happen in isolation.

Do You Need to Cycle Sync Your Workouts?
This is also where the conversation around “cycle syncing” can become confusing.
You may have heard that women should perform specific types of exercise during each phase of their menstrual cycle.
The research doesn't currently support a rigid exercise prescription based on menstrual cycle phase for every woman.
But that doesn't mean you should ignore how you feel.
Some women notice very little change in their exercise capacity throughout their cycle. Others notice meaningful differences in energy, pain, migraines, sleep, or perceived exertion at particular points in the month.
Instead of following a complicated calendar, use your own symptoms and recovery as information.
Feeling strong and energetic? It may be a great day to challenge yourself.
Dealing with significant cramps, heavy bleeding, poor sleep, or fatigue? Adjusting your workout isn't failing your plan.
It's responding to your physiology.
The Conversation Changes Again in Perimenopause
As we enter perimenopause, the hormonal landscape changes and our exercise priorities may need to change with it.
Fluctuating and eventually declining estrogen can affect bone and muscle over time, making resistance training increasingly important.
This is where we like to think of muscle as armour.
Not because muscle prevents hormonal changes, but because intentionally building and maintaining muscle gives us valuable reserve as we move through midlife and beyond.
Muscle supports metabolic health, physical function, strength, and blood sugar regulation, while resistance training and weight-bearing exercise provide important stimuli for bone.
This isn't the time to become afraid of challenging your body.
But it also doesn't mean suddenly adding intense workouts every day.
The goal is to provide enough stimulus to maintain and build strength in a way that allows you to feel your best and recover effectively.
So, How Much Exercise Is Enough?
There isn't one perfect hormonal workout.
For most women, a well-rounded approach will include some combination of:
resistance training
cardiovascular exercise
regular walking and everyday movement
mobility and flexibility
adequate rest and recovery
But the exact dose depends on where you're starting.
Someone who is largely sedentary doesn't need to jump into multiple intense workouts per week to improve her hormonal health. Adding regular walks and two manageable strength sessions may be a significant and beneficial change.
Someone who is already training intensely 5-6 days a week while struggling with irregular periods and persistent fatigue probably doesn't need another workout.
She may need more recovery, more fuel, or a different training load.
More isn't always better. Less isn't always better either.
The goal is enough.
Enough movement to challenge your muscles, support insulin sensitivity, protect your bones, and improve cardiovascular and metabolic health.
Enough food and recovery to allow your body to respond to that challenge.
And enough flexibility to recognize that what your body needs may change through different seasons, cycles, and stages of life.
